Windows: AV and spyware for PCs

For a one time scan, you can use Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool.  Microsoft updates and releases this tool the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Microsoft Defender

For spyware detection and removal, Microsoft offers Windows Defender. This is real-time monitoring as well as having the ability to schedule scans.  Microsoft updates this from time to time, you can get the updates by running Windows Update.  Windows Defender is included in Windows Vista and is available for download for Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later.

 Microsoft Firewall

You should always enable Windows Firewall.  Windows firewall blocks incoming and outgoing communications that may be from malicious software / computers. How to do this varies depending on your operating system, generally you can make this change in Control Panel.  In Windows XP this is set under Security Center. Windows Vista there is a Firewall icon in control panel.  If you have Automatic Updates enabled, Windows Firewall should already be protecting your computer.

Microsoft recently announced they will be offering free anti-virus software. The software is code named Morro and should be available towards the end of 2009.

A choice for personal / home computers is Free AVG.  This product is available for home use for free.  AVG also offers commerical AV products.

Windows: Power Savings

Computers can consume a lot of power and thus have a significant impact to your energy bill.

The easiest thing to do is, when you are not using your PC just shutdown it now.   Especially when you leave the office for the night or go to bed at night.  A reason the computer might need to be left on is if there are some backups running over night.  If your computer does need be left running over night, turning off monitors, speakers and other peripherals does help and adds up to saving money on your energy bill.

Microsoft Power OptionsThere are many options in Windows Vista for Power Savings.  To set these options go to Control Panel -> Power Option.  The two easiest things you can set are when to turn off the display and when to put the computer to sleep.  These are items that can be turned off easily.  Think about the amount of time you typically step away from the computer and set accordingly. Microsoft Vista comes with three different 'plans' that make some settings based on general use of computers, balanced, power saver and high performance.  You have the option to create your own custom power plan based on exactly how you use your computer.

The two easiest things you can set are when to turn off the display and when to put the computer to sleep at a set time.  When you turn the display off the display and computer is still using power, but will be using much less energy than it sitting there running some screen saver that no one is looking at.  Determine which settings work best for your workstation or laptop and set appropriately.

If you like to dig down and really tweak your computers power usage to to 'Change Advanced power settings' on the screen above.

My MySQL database does not support UTF-8. Do I have a problem?
No you don't. Versions of MySQL lower than 4.1 do not have built in UTF-8 support. However, Joomla! 1.5 has made provisions for backward compatibility and is able to use UTF-8 on older databases. Let the installer take care of all the settings and there is no need to make any changes to the database (charset, collation, or any other).

What is the FTP layer for?

The FTP Layer allows file operations (such as installing Extensions or updating the main configuration file) without having to make all the folders and files writable. This has been an issue on Linux and other Unix based platforms in respect of file permissions. This makes the site admin's life a lot easier and increases security of the site.

You can check the write status of relevent folders by going to ''Help->System Info" and then in the sub-menu to "Directory Permissions". With the FTP Layer enabled even if all directories are red, Joomla! will operate smoothly.

NOTE: the FTP layer is not required on a Windows host/server.
